I apologise in advance if this comes off as a rant but it is something which has been bubbling under this calm, cool demeanor for sometime. Those who have ventured to a show with me over the past few years know that I have one major gripe with music fans, mobile phones! I get it, people want a moment to treasure, videos to look back on. Don’t get me wrong, I do like to look back at photos of my evenings but most of all I like to talk about the feeling of being there in the moment. I like to talk about my highlights, the people I met whilst there and most of all I like to have my hands free for either a pint or to clap along to my favourite songs.
On the most part I have spent good money to attend a show, often travelled quite far to watch some of my favourite acts come to life on stage. 8 times out of 10 I have had to watch the best part of a whole show through some one’s phone. I might as well of stayed at home and watched their footage on Youtube. But that isn’t what I wanted. I wanted to be there, watch them, engage in the music. Why be there if you are going to stand there filming it on your phone. Let’s be honest the sound isn’t going to be great when you watch it back, you will hear thousands of other people singing along out of tune and probably a lot of heads bobbling along. So please explain to me why?
It is also plain rude. Whilst they seem perfectly content to film the entire show, it doesn’t mean I should be subjected to watching it through the phone. It is not why I am here, it is not something I want to do and it is certainly something I shouldn’t have to do. I can appreciate people wish to take a quick photo or a 30 second video to show off to friends but that is it. Anything more than that is beyond unnecessary.
I did pre warn you that this may seem like a rant but I am trying to understand why anyone would do this. Over the years I have attended many shows and on the most part I have enjoyed them, but in the past couple of years I have started to lose the enjoyment. I prefer local shows or the independent festivals, this is where the real fans seem to be. The people who appreciate the music and want to be there to be a part of it. This is what I love about our local music scene, the sense of community that shines through.
If you are one of those people who goes to a show just to film the whole thing then please consider the people behind you. If you want to ruin the show for yourself then go ahead but don’t ruin it for other people, they paid to be in the moment.
I’d love to hear what your thoughts are on this.
